Drone Footage Aliasing/Moire Fix

Drone Footage Aliasing/Moire Fix

I just wanted to share this tip for fixing drone footage that has heavy aliasing, it can actually be used for any Aliasing/Moire but we get a lot off the drone cameras. It’s something I have struggled with for a while and haven’t found an easy direct fix within avid, if you find one let me know! I tried replicating this process in Media Composer but it didn’t work so this is my best fix for now and does a pretty much perfect job with every shot I have put through so far.

In resolve your timeline must be progressive so video field processing needs to be disabled – unticked

Add a blur of .6 percent, this is an increase from turned off 0.50 to 0.53 (sometimes you may need to go heavier)

Render out the shots in 1080p and then cut them back in. You can then switch the project back to i by ticking Enable video field processing and carry on as usual. A tip for doing this quickly is in Avid to figure out the naming conventions for the drone footage, colour the clips and then lift them to V2 in avid. Then when your AAF comes into Resolve you can just disable V1, group the clips on V2 add the blur to the group. Easy peasy!
