Craft Editing Options from The Finish Line
Every production requires a bespoke solution for editorial; whether they are located at home, in serviced offices, or in the production office, we need to take into consideration a number of variables such as internet speed and location, as well as the data management and security demands of the project.
The fundamentals of our craft editing solutions are covered below. Contact our bookings team for pricing and additional information.
Ingest
The most important stage in the post production of any project is the media management and ingest; rushes can be transferred to us via drives (ideally encrypted for security in transit) or via accelerated data transfer (when appropriate upload speeds are available).
All rushes are backed up to our secure encrypted storage, quality checked, colour managed and then transcoded for the editorial team. It is at this stage that we recommend generating proxy files for the production, which can be used for viewing as well as automated or manual transcription.
An upload portal is provided to each production to guarantee that the ingested media comes through this process, thus making the same files available to all members of the team and ensuring a seamless conform process for final post.
Via an existing edit suite
If the production company or editors working remotely have their own pre-existing edit suites, we can set them up with encrypted and synchronised hard drives, whereby the relevant projects and media (including anything added as the production advances) are accessible to the entire editorial team.
With this method you have all the benefits of working locally without compromising on the features of a traditional shared environment. Read/write access is managed to prevent accidental deletion of media and/or projects, with offline media mirrored between the editor and secure cloud storage, as well as local encrypted storage at The Finish Line.
An important note is that we cannot provide advanced support for edit suites in this situation, due mainly to unknown factors that can arise from a system which has not been configured by The Finish Line but we will always endeavour to help where possible!
Via a rental edit suite
Using the same process as above for media management but with a rental edit suite built and configured to our specifications. This is the best way to safeguard a system and dedicate it to your project, with the added benefit of having complete technical support to manage the system as required.
Via remote access
When there is a call for the highest level of security, or extremely large amounts of media needs to be accessed by your editors, then our remote access suites are the best solution.
We can provide access for the editor to dial into a secure system from their own system, although we can’t support their personal computer.
Alternatively we can provide the entire system to the editor which they hardwire into their network or router, giving them the highest quality and ultra low latency remote access system available.
The main strength in this approach is that no data leaves our data centre and the editors are effectively working via a window into our secure systems. They are also completely sandboxed so that each project is self-contained and nothing can leave the system without the production’s approval.
This is the ideal way to work with sensitive content, or when a broadcaster stipulates high-level security requirements in their contract terms.
For Edit Producers and the Production Team
The technical ability of the production team always varies substantially, so we tend to design the collaboration around what works best for all members of the team, but it can also be tailored from person to person. We always recommend for every production to have low resolution proxies created from the offline media that matches exactly what is made available to the editors, which we can then upload to a viewing platform of their choice or one provided by us. What is possible ultimately comes down to security and needs of the specific project, but we are also able to provide any of the above editorial options to the team, should they want to have advanced access to help the editors with sync pulls and assemblies.
